Career Advice ...

Not every career move starts with wanting to leave.

For many professionals, the thought of a new opportunity begins much earlier. It starts with the small questions:

  • Am I still progressing?

  • Am I learning enough?

  • Does my current role still align with where I want to go?

  • What else could be available if I explored my options?

You might enjoy your current role. You might have a great team, a manager you love, and a company that you genuinely like working for.

But staying comfortable does not always mean you’re moving forward.

Taking the time to reflect on your career doesn’t mean that you have decided to leave. It means you’re staying aware of your options, understanding your market value, and making sure that your current role is still supporting your ambitions.

At Yolk Recruitment, we speak to many professionals who are not actively looking for a new job but are curious about what opportunities could be available if they decided to take the next step.

If you’re unsure whether it’s time to explore your options, ask yourself these 7 questions.

1. Am I still learning and developing in my current role?

A role can feel comfortable for all the right reasons. You know your responsibilities, you understand the business, and you have built confidence in what you do.

But comfort and progression aren’t always the same thing.

The best careers continue to evolve. Whether that means learning new skills, taking on greater responsibilities, or being exposed to new challenges, development is an important part of staying engaged and moving forward.

Ask yourself:

  • Am I learning something new in my current role?

  • Am I being challenged in a way that helps me grow?

  • Am I developing skills that will benefit my future career?

  • If I stayed in this role for another two years, would I feel like I was progressing?

If the answer is no, it may be time to consider what opportunities could help you continue developing.

2. Has my role grown, but my career stayed the same?

Many professionals find themselves doing more than they were originally hired to do.

You become the person people rely on. You take ownership of important projects. You support colleagues, solve problems, and contribute beyond your job description.

But has your career moved forward alongside those responsibilities?

Ask yourself:

  • Have I taken on more responsibility without a change in title or progression?

  • Am I operating at a higher level than my current role reflects?

  • Is my contribution being recognised?

  • Am I being rewarded for the value I bring?

Your experience, skills, and achievements should continue to create opportunities for progression.

3. Do I know what my next career step looks like?

Sometimes the biggest challenge is not knowing when to leave. It’s knowing what comes next.

You may be successful in your current role but unsure about the next stage of your career. Should you move into leadership? Develop a new skill set? Explore another industry? Look for a business with more progression opportunities?

Ask yourself:

  • Do I have a clear career goal?

  • Can I see a realistic progression path where I am?

  • Do I know what opportunities are available in the wider market?

  • Would a conversation with someone who understands my industry help?

It’s important to remember that you don’t need to have all of the answers before exploring your options. Sometimes clarity comes from understanding what’s possible.

4. Do I find myself wondering what else is out there?

Curiosity is often one of the first signs that you’re ready to explore.

You may not be applying for jobs or actively searching every week, but you might find yourself looking at opportunities, comparing salaries, or wondering what other companies can offer.

Ask yourself:

  • Have I recently looked at job opportunities out of curiosity?

  • Do I wonder what my experience is worth in the current market?

  • Would I like to understand what roles are available?

  • How would I feel if I saw a role that was a better fit?

Exploring your options doesn’t mean that you’re committed to leaving. It simply means you’re making informed decisions about your future.

5. Has what I want from my career changed?

Your priorities naturally change over time.

The things that mattered to you when you accepted your current role may not be the same things that you value, and that’s perfectly normal.

Maybe you want more flexibility. Maybe you’re looking for better progression. Maybe you want a role that better fits your personal goals.

Ask yourself:

  • Does my current role still align with what matters to me?

  • Am I getting the flexibility and balance that I need?

  • Does my current career path still excite me?

  • Has my definition of career success changed?

A new career opportunity is not always about leaving a bad situation. Sometimes it’s about finding something that better fits where you are now.

6. Am I waiting for the “right time” to make a change?

Many professionals delay exploring new opportunities because the timing never feels “quite right”.

There’s always another project to finish, another busy period to get through, or another milestone to reach.

But waiting for the perfect moment can sometimes mean waiting longer than you intended.

Ask yourself:

  • Am I putting off exploring opportunities because I’m waiting for the right time?

  • Would understanding my options help me make a better decision?

  • Am I staying because I’m truly happy, or because change feels uncertain?

  • What could I learn from having a conversation with a recruiter?

You don’t need to decide today. Sometimes the most valuable first step is just gathering information.

7. If the right opportunity came along, would I want to hear about it?

This is perhaps the simplest question, but often the most revealing.

You don’t need to dislike your current role to consider something new. Many of the strongest candidates we work with are successful professionals who are open to the right opportunity when it comes along.

Ask yourself:

  • Would I be interested in a role with better progression?

  • Would I consider an opportunity that offered new challenges?

  • Would I like to understand what my next move could look like?

  • Am I open to a conversation, even if I’m not ready to move?

If the answer is ‘yes’, it may be time to explore what’s available.

Exploring your options doesn’t mean you have to leave

One of the biggest misconceptions about speaking to a recruiter is that it means you have already decided to move.

It doesn’t.

A conversation with a specialist recruiter can simply help you understand:

  • What opportunities exist in your market

  • How your experience compares against current demands

  • What employers are looking for

  • What your next career step could look like

The best career decisions are informed decisions.
