You might not be looking for a new legal role.
But that doesn't mean you shouldn't know what's happening in the market.
The UK legal sector is continuing to grow. The Law Society's latest benchmarking data found that 85% of surveyed firms reported year-on-year fee income growth in 2025, which continues throughout 2026, while the number of fee earners increased by 2.3%. At the same time, 35% of mid-sized firms said hiring had become more challenging.
So while you might feel comfortable where you are, there are still businesses actively looking for legal expertise.
The question is: are you making the most of the opportunities available to you?
Are you gaining the experience that will move your career forward?
Time served doesn't automatically equal career progression.
If you're several years into your career, you should be able to point to how your experience has developed. More complex matters. Greater client responsibility. New specialisms. Leadership opportunities.
If your responsibilities have grown but your development hasn't, that's worth paying attention to.
Ask yourself:
If I stayed in this exact role for another two years, would my CV look significantly different?
If the answer is no, it might be time to see what else is available.

Are you aware of how much demand there is for your skills?
This is where passive candidates can have a real advantage.
The Law Society reports that firms are still facing recruitment and retention pressures, with mid-sized firms explicitly revealing that hiring is more difficult than in previous years.
That means your experience could be more valuable than you realise.
Your practice area, PQE, client exposure and specialist knowledge all influence where you sit in the market.
When was the last time you actually benchmarked yourself against it?
You don't need to apply for a job to find out.
Could your experience take you somewhere you haven’t considered?
A legal career doesn't have to follow one path.
Private practice isn't the only destination. The Law Society reports that in-house solicitors now account for around a quarter of the profession, with opportunities across commerce and industry, government and the not-for-profit sector.
You could also move into a different practice area, change firm size, specialise further or take on a leadership position.
Sometimes the biggest career opportunity isn't one you've been actively searching for. It's one you didn't realise was available to you.
Are you waiting for your employer to create your next opportunity?
It's easy to assume progression will happen naturally.
You'll get the promotion eventually.
The right role will open up.
Someone will notice how much more you're doing.
But your career shouldn't depend entirely on waiting for an internal opportunity.
